Breast Reduction

Breast reduction is generally performed to reduce symptoms associated with large breasts. Any symptoms that are not related to large breasts will not be improved. In addition to reducing the volume of the breast, it also “reshapes” the breasts, usually into a more aesthetic appearance, and elevates the Nipple Areola Complex (NAC) into a more anatomic position. The procedure has one major tradeoff, that is, it cannot be performed without leaving visible scars, some which may be less than ideal. There is no “classic” patient, although many women are overweight or have a wide chest wall, which results in a different appearance than women with a more normal weight or torso width, as you will see below. The NAC may also appear “differently” depending on whether a pedicle technique was used versus a free NAC graft technique. Of note, in the early phases postoperatively, the newly shaped breasts always look very “perky”, however, with time, there is settling, resulting in a more “normal” shaped breast. Since all of the “after” photos are taken approximately 6 months after surgery, this more “normal” shape is what is visible. And as is the rule with any breast procedure, over the course of aging, gravity, loss of elasticity, weight fluctuations, pregnancy and other hormonal changes, the natural breast will change.
