Dear 16-Year-Old Me….a Warning to Your Future Self About Melanoma

Dear 16-year-old Me
They say, “Hind sight is 20/20”. And this film (posted on YouTube, see link below) poignantly depicts just that…..if we had only known then what we know now, maybe we would have done things differently.  This is about Malignant Melanoma, a sometimes preventable and a potentially life threatening skin cancer if not detected and treated early.  If we knew that we might be diagnosed with it in our future, would we have been more careful about sun exposure and other skin cancer preventive measures in our youth?
Many of you know I have always been a “sun worshiper” (helped my acne as a teenager, “tan fat is better than white fat” as a young adult, great source of Vitamin D as a “health conscious” adult )… better than being a smoker!  I am much better now about wearing my sunblock on my face, neck and chest, but more so for anti-aging purposes.  Am I bad to tell my patients, “Do as I say, and not as I do”?

This film is very gripping – it was made possible thanks to the generosity of real Canadians and Americans whose lives have been touched by melanoma. These are not actors and I think that you, like I was, will be touched with their personal stories.

As an aside, you may enjoy the background music of the talented Freelance Whales, a New York-based group who lent their song, Generator ^ First Floor, to the film.  After watching, please feel free to share. And as usual, if you should have any questions about the wellness of your skin or want information about skin cancer awareness and prevention, be sure to contact me.
