Proposed Legislation

Physicians are likely the most regulated profession in the United States.  As a physician, I think some of the rules and regulations are overbearing and/or unnecessary.  However, there is a proposed House bill that I fully support because it helps to protect patients in our competitive health care environment, especially plastic surgery.  Health care providers would have to disclose licensing in advertisements under the provision of a House bill.  The Federal Trade Commission would be responsible for enforcing the law, which would prohibit health care providers from offering deceptive or misleading information that implies training or qualifications they do not have. I wish the bill would go one step further…to require the health care provider, if a physican, to disclose certification by a board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties, not a “bogus” board that someone merely pays to obtain certification.  For more information about this proposed legislation, go to http://www.ama-assn.org/amednews/2011/02/07/prl20207.htm
